Air Tahiti Nui, A340-300

Air Tahiti Nui, A340-300

Air Tahiti Nui, A340-300 at Exeter International Airport, 7th October 2010. The day started out particularly foggy making for some interesting shots. I went into work an hour and half early to catch the best morning light.

The aircraft arrived at Exeter on October 6th carrying over 140 Royal Marines after completing a tour in Afghanistan.

Air Tahiti Nui was established on 31 October 1996 and commenced flight operations on 20 November 1998. It is the first international airline based in Papeete, Tahiti, formed to develop inbound tourism. The government of French Polynesia is the major shareholder (61.7%) along with other local investors. Currently, Air Tahiti Nui has 782 employees.

The Airbus A340 is a long-range four-engined wide-body commercial passenger airliner manufactured by Airbus, a subsidiary of EADS. It seats up to 375 passengers in the standard variants and 440 in the stretched 600 series, and has a range between 6,700 and 9,000 nmi (12400 to 16600 km). It is similar in design to the twin-engined A330 with which it was concurrently designed. Initial A340 versions share the fuselage and wing of the A330 while later models are longer and have larger wings.

Tahiti 2008: Sailing the Leeward Islands

In January, we headed to Tahiti with about 35 people from Tradewinds Sailing Club to experience Polynesia. After an 8-hour flight on Air Tahiti Nui (nui means big), we landed in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. After spending the night sleeping on the floor of the airport (which was OK when I was in my 20s, but...)....
(The flower on the tail is the Tahitian gardenia - a symbol used everywhere.)
Here are just a few of my photographs from the trip.

Aphrodite's Island: The European Discovery of Tahiti

Aphrodite's Island is a bold new account of the European discovery of Tahiti, the Pacific island of mythic status that has figured so powerfully in European imaginings about sexuality, the exotic, and the nobility or bestiality of "savages." In this groundbreaking book, Anne Salmond takes readers to the center of the shared history to furnish rich insights into Tahitian perceptions of the visitors while illuminating the full extent of European fascination with Tahiti. As she discerns the impact and meaning of the European effect on the islands, she demonstrates how, during the early contact period, the mythologies of Europe and Tahiti intersected and became entwined. Drawing on Tahitian oral histories, European manuscripts and artworks, collections of Tahitian artifacts, and illustrated with contemporary sketches, paintings, and engravings from the voyages, Aphrodite's Island provides a vivid account of the Europeans' Tahitian adventures. At the same time, the book's compelling insights into Tahitian life significantly change the way we view the history of this small island during a period when it became a crossroads for Europe.
